Return Of The Original Defenders

Marvel is releasing a new Defenders comic.  This new comic book story will not consist of the last team which was the same as the Netflix team:

  • Daredevil
  • Jessica Jones
  • Luke Cage
  • Iron Fist

This team instead will consist of the original Defenders:

  • Hulk
  • Namor
  • Doctor Strange
  • Silver Surfer

New Comic Story

Before we get the Defenders #1 arriving December 19, 2018 there is going to be four issues leading up to it about each of the team members called “The Best Defense”.  It will start December 5 with Immortal Hulk: Defenders #1 then Namor: Defenders #1.  A week later December 12, Doctor Strange: Defenders #1 and finish up with Silver Surfer: Defenders #1.  Defenders #1 is actually the conclusion of Best Defenders.

Each team member will be investigating a mystery that they will soon realize is connected and that is when we get Defenders #1 December 19, 2018.  Most likely if this story does well, Marvel will spin it off into its own series.

Bye to the Netflix Team

Brian Michael Bendis was a pusher for the Defenders team the Netflix show is based on.  He has recently left Marvel to work exclusively for DC.  Bendis wrote the last Defenders title and is the creator of Jessica Jones.

Could it be that between the lose of big-name, Brian Michael Bendis, and Disney’s push for their own streaming service, Marvel has no incentive to push Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist?

Classic Defenders

The original Defenders team consisted of Namor the Submariner, Hulk, and Doctor Strange.  Later Silver Surfer joined the team along with Valkyrie.  These are all characters Marvel now has movie rights to.

New Popularity

Namor the Submariner has recently become relevant has he is the main antagonist in the current Avengers story, World War Below.  In this story the Namor, the King of Atlantis, has decided to go to war with the surface world.  As of issue 9 he has even assembled a team, Defenders of the Deep.

Hulk, having been killed in Civil War 2, was recently resurrected in Avengers No Surrender and is now the Immortal Hulk.

Silver Surfer is one of the characters Marvel Studios will gain the movie rights for with the Disney Fox deal.  Silver Surfer is an important character to the Marvel Cosmos.

Doctor Strange is becoming more popular since the release of his movie and fans can’t wait for the squeal.

Defenders Movie?

This rendition of the team consists of characters Marvel has movie rights to.  It would stand to reason that if this comic is popular there could be a future Defenders Movie.  I would bet a movie about these characters would take place in space.

After phase 3 it’s a real toss up as to what they are going to do next.  There is a strong possibility Keven Feige always planned to get the Fox Movie rights back.  The Defenders Movie could be a way to introduce Silver Surfer before Galactus.  That way there is time to build up to Galactus and explore the Marvel Cosmos.  As of now the Guardians of the Galaxy are the only space team Marvel Studios has until Captain Marvel is released.

Which version of the defenders do you prefer?  Netflix or this new classic team?
